Summer Planting at New Campus Community Garden
The new Campus Community
Garden has recently undergone its
first planting, receiving summer
crops which will continue growing
into the fall semester.
After weeks of difficult manual
labor, the UH Green team, with help
from UH Grounds and consulting from
Urban Harvest, has created a fifteen
bed, brick-lined, irrigated garden.
The garden is located in Cougar
Woods at the corner of Wheeler and
Cullen, in an area which was
researched and determined optimal
for crop growth by its exposure to
rain and sunlight.
The Garden will be primarily
comprised of vegetables and herbs
which may be used in campus recipes.
Some of the crops which were planted
Monday include squash, tomatoes,
cucumbers, and various herbs.
Many came out to celebrate and to
help with this project, including
Executive VP Carl Carlucci, Regent
Nandita Berry, President Renu Khator,
and even new students interested in
green initiatives on campus.
Participants received stickers with
the proud phrase, Today I planted a
seed for a brighter UH tomorrow,
showing the real spirit of the
occasion.
The garden is sure to be a great
asset and joy to the campus, and
many participants expressed
excitement for the future crops it
will yield.
