About the Centennial Project

In 2027, the University of Houston will mark its Centennial – celebrating 100 years of history and achievement. We are embarking upon a bold and ambitious plan to take our campus to the Next Level and make it a destination for all and one of pride for the city of Houston.

This phase of the Centennial Project focuses on three core areas: University Plaza, Centennial Drive and Wilhelmina's Grove.

The Three Pillars of the Centennial Project

As we approach the University of Houston's Centennial, we are committed to transforming key areas of our campus that will shape the future of our institution and enhance the experience for students, faculty and visitors alike. The three core areas of focus — University Drive, Centennial Plaza and Wilhelmina's Grove — are at the heart of this initiative.

University Drive

The primary campus entrance on University Drive will be redefined to create a memorable arrival experience and includes the addition of a new gateway monument. A continuous line of trees will form a shaded central pathway from the gateway to Cullen Performance Hall. We envision University Drive as a pedestrian-first environment complete with outdoor rooms anchored by public art and dining spaces. This first impression experience will truly make our campus more welcoming and inviting.

Centennial Plaza

Centennial Plaza will be the heart and soul of the revitalized UH campus. Surrounded by the University’s original historic buildings, the Plaza has been a central location for generations of college students to gather and build connections. The new Centennial Plaza will be the epicenter of campus life, becoming the defining space for traditions and memories. Along the edge of the Plaza, elevated “outdoor rooms” will include benches, tables and chairs where students can meet.

Wilhelmina's Grove

Nestled in the heart of the campus’ arts district, Wilhelmina’s Grove connects the Moores School of Music, Blaffer Art Museum, Wortham Theatre and the School of Art. This park space welcomes visitors to explore public art installations, rest and play between classes or before athletics games, and find a quiet spot on a busy campus. Enhancements will include an amphitheater space, a beautiful water feature and increased shade from a grove of trees.
