UH Community Should be Prepared for Upcoming Winter Weather

UH Dining Introduces Late Night Food Truck Option for Students

Houston, Dec. 5, 2014 — The University of Houston Office of Emergency Management encourages the UH community to be prepared for all kinds of emergencies, including any poor weather that may descend on the Houston area this winter.

The first day of winter officially is Sunday, Dec. 21. Winter weather can sneak up in a hurry, so it is always important to be ready. While the Houston area doesn't normally experience the winter weather conditions that cities in the northern region of the country do, there have been hard freezes and icy roads.

Here are a few driving safety tips to keep safe during the winter months:

  • Avoid unnecessary travel if possible, monitor local weather broadcasts, and follow up-to-the-minute weather conditions with the National Weather Service.
  • Remember that ice forms first on bridges, overpasses and shaded areas.
  • On icy roads, drive slowly, increase distance needed for stopping, and avoid using cruise control.
  • Make sure your vehicle is properly maintained before any trip; check fluid and antifreeze levels.
  • Buckle up everyone in the vehicle. It's the law.
  • Ensure that you have winterized your vehicle with a go kit for your vehicle.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency's Ready Campaign offers many resources and tip to prepare for all types of emergencies, including winter weather preparedness. More winter weather information can also be found at the Texas Department of Public Safety's Winter Storm Preparedness Planning website.
