As Spring Draws Near, Be Prepared for Flooding

Floods

Houston, March 13, 2014 - The University of Houston Office of Emergency Management is providing tips and information to help the UH community prepare for flooding dangers during the spring season.

March 18-22 is Flood Awareness Week, which is a good time for students, faculty and staff to educate themselves on being ready flooding.

Before the floods come:

  • Build an emergency kit.
  • Make a family and friends communications plan.
  • Tell friends and family if you hear a flood warning on TV or radio.

During the floods:

  • Listen to authorities and safety officials.
  • If there is any possibility of a flash flood, move immediately to higher ground.
  • Do not walk through moving water. Even 6 inches of water can make you fall.

After the floods:

  • Stay away from flood water. It could be contaminated with dangerous substances.
  • Stay away from moving water. It can knock you off your feet.
  • Stay out of the way of emergency workers so they can do their job easily.
