John Dye was born in 1754 in Middlesex County, New Jersey, the son of James Dey and Sarah Leach. Two primary sources exist for the information which follows:

  2. Historical Collections of Brown County, Ohio by Thompson, published in 1968.

John Dye would have been about 10 years old when his father died. Little is know about John's early life. He was a soldier in the Revolutionary War and served with General George Washington as a part of the Pennsylvania Line, 11th Infantry. The commander was Captain Samuel Dawson in Colonel Richard Jumphrey's Regement. He applied for and received a pension (number 2344) on July 22, 1819 in Brown County, Ohio. He died on April 23, 1836 in Brown County, Ohio and is buried on the old Day farm, 3 miles east of Georgetown at the intersection of State Route 125 and the Georgetwon-Arnheim Road in Pleasant Townshipl A U.S. Government marker was placed there by his descendants and a dedication service was held on the 100th anniversary of his death, April 23, 1936.
