Welcome to the Home Page for Applied Hydrogeology

by C. W. Fetter

Dr. C. W. Fetter created this home page.  It is a supplement to the Fourth Edition of Applied Hydrogeology, which was published by Prentice Hall, Inc.

The first edition of Applied Hydrogeology was published in 1980. Subsequent editions were published in 1988, 1994 and now 2001. The book has been translated into several languages, most recently Chinese, and is used around the world in university level coursework.

This book draws upon his 35 years of experience as a practicing hydrogeologist. He began his career working for a consulting engineering firm on Long Island, New York for four years. This was followed by 25 years as a full time faculty member in the Department of Geology at the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh, including 15 years as department chair. In the spring of 1996, Dr. Fetter returned to the full time practice of hydrogeology, this time as a self-employed consultant. Over the years his clients included the US Environmental Protection Agency, the Wisconsin Department of Justice, municipal governments, consulting engineering firms, corporations, insurance companies and law firms.

He received a B.A. degree in chemistry from DePauw University, (not DePaul University as indicated in the About the Author section of the text) and a M.A. in geology and Ph.D. in Hydrology from Indiana University. He was also a registered professional geologist in Wisconsin, Indiana and Illinois and a registered professional engineer in Wisconsin. His honors include The Excellence in Science and Engineering Award from The Association of Ground Water Scientists and Engineers in 1996 and the Wisconsin Ground Water Association awarded him their 1998 Distinguished Professional Award. Dr. Fetter is also the author of Contaminant Hydrogeology.

Dr. Fetter passed away in 2011. He was always pleased to know the impact and influence his text has had in educating generations of hydrogeology students around the world. This textbook is part of his legacy to higher education and dissemination of knowledge in his field.
