**To be sure, some common people were apparently happy to testify (and modify their stories accordingly) in exchange for payment. William Shepard, a miller in late sixteenth-century Devon, would depose for the highest bidder. He admitted to bragging that he ‘had 4s. a weeke of [a gentleman] for his wages [and that] if he had not good maintenance . . . he wold tell another tale’ in court, one that would ‘do [the parish] twenty poundes worth of good’ in a dispute about grain-grinding tolls. - Hillary Taylor, The price of the poor’s words: social relations and the economics of deposing for one’s ‘betters’ in early modern England., Economic History Review (2018) https://doi.org/10.1111/ehr.12773 - STAC 5/S15/15, William Shepard (deposition); Henry Jewell (deposition).
