11 Jan 1559 From my Lord his Grace to Mr. Secretary

From the Duke of Norfolk's Book of Entries.

YOU shall receive herewith Lettres from Sir James Croffts to Sir Ralp Sadlyer, with others, addressed to them from the Earle of Arraine and the Lord James Steward; by the which you shall understand the doings betwene the French and them in the Fiffe, and their greate desire to have sum relief at our Handes: Whiche we thinke is not to be denyed unto them, but rather in my poore Opynyon, it is good to devise howe to conforte them with sum convenyent sume of Moneye, untill our Ships do arrive, whereof as yet we hier nothinge. And therefore I have thought good punctually to lysence Sir Ralph Sadlier to goo to Barwick for Thaccomplisshemente and Expedicion of the same, as the Caase shall requyre. And if the Erle of Huntley woll take part with them, as by their seid Lettres it seameth he woll doo, it is thought the Matter woll take muche better effecte. Wherefore I think good, rather to retayne them in conforte; praying you to advertise me with all spede, what shall be thought there meet and convenyente to be donn further in this behalfe; which I shall accomplishe with Dylygance, according to my Dewtie. And so, &c.

Tho. Norffolk.
