  • STAC 5/B2/16 - B A C I D - 37 Eliz - Norfolk - Wiliiam Barwicke v Philip Lovell
    • Earlier that decade [1590s], a widow from Garboldisham (Norfolk) who was threatened with a subpoena, said ‘that before she wold testifie anie thinge eyter against [a local gentleman] or anie that belonged unto him, she wold be torne in peces [by] wyld horses’. STAC 5/B2/16, Thomas Barwick (deposition). Hillary Taylor, The price of the poor’s words: social relations and the economics of deposing for one’s ‘betters’ in early modern England., Economic History Review (2018) https://doi.org/10.1111/ehr.12773
    • A Norfolk gentleman who deposed for the complainant (also a gentleman) claimed that Elizabeth Costens had approached him and voluntarily confessed that she had ‘forsworne herselfe against [the complainant]’, before adding that she had been ‘drawne and persuaded soe to doe by . . . hir mistris’. - STAC 5/B2/16, Edward Barwick (deposition). Costen’s case suggests that there could be a gendered pressure involved in subornation: Costen herself was approached about testifying by her mistress, Mrs Lovell, and her husband was approached by Mr Lovell. However, the evidence does not permit a more thoroughgoing exploration of this issue.
