Inquisitions into encroached lands of the Forest of Snowdonia in Caernarvonshire granted by the Queen unto the Robert Earl of Leicester reserving unto the Crown certain fees. Several of these lands, by intrusion and wrongful entry, afterwards came into the possession of the defendants; during the Earl’s lifetime the tenants paid rent for the lands which then descended to Ambrose Earl of Warwick; he conveyed them to the Lady Anne now Countess of Warwick, and the complainant bought them of her. But sithence the defendants have obstinately refused to pay, for which refusal they were sued at the Exchequer. Forming a common fund, they made collection in all parts of Caernarvonshire to maintain that suit. A commission of the great men of the North was thereupon appointed to enquire into the encroachment of the lands, and warrents were issued to the sheriff, Robert Wyn of Brynkir, to summon a jury of the competent number of men on their oaths; but the defendants, owing to their scheming, caused themselves to be summoned on that Jury, and refused to take evidence saying that they knew of their own knowledge all that was to be known; they thereupon returned a verdict that the information that the complainant desired was not available.

A dispute having arisen at the Great Sessions held for Caernarvonshire at Conway, John Wyn, at a Commission sitting in the church to assess the subsidy, struck the complainant, then standing at the Commission Table, a blow upon the face. The complainant describes John Wyn as “forgetting his own birth being but by bastardy descended from the complainant’s house and his great grandfather, being mean by birth, was the only advancer of his posterity, by and through the means of the complainant’s ancestors, whose servant he was.” Assault by John Wyn upon the server of a writ susequent upon the former assault; misdemeanours as sheriff of Merioneth, in secretly indicting and then compounding with felons — “the harsh and cruel dealings of John Wyn have caused many people to commit suicide,” examples being cited in the bill.
