Virtual Services for Fall 2020

Greetings GCSW Community! Due to building renovations and changes in the mode of instruction in response to COVID19, the majority of GCSW faculty and staff are working offsite this fall and staffing of the Social Work building is limited. We continue to be committed to working hard to support all our students from offsite. Here’s how to reach us this semester.

Social Work Advising

During fall 2020 advisors are hosting biweekly Advising Zoom sessions on Monday and Thursdays from 12 – 1pm. Links to Zoom sessions will be shared in the weekly Social Word newsletter or via email.

Community Building

Here are a few ways to engage with others outside the classroom this semester.

GCSW Support Space: We will continue the online GCSW Support Space in fall which meets the 2nd and 4th Wednesdays of the month at noon. Each meeting includes an opportunity for check-in and features a short presentation from college faculty and staff. Click here to join.

Virtual Check-In’s with the Dean: Drop in to talk with Dean Dettlaff and other administrative staff.

College events: We have several exciting college events planned for fall focused on racial justice. Virtual Check-In meeting times, college event information and other opportunities will be communicated in the weekly Social Word newsletter.

Support for Online Learning

For information about tech access and/or how to navigate technology that may be necessary for your coursework this semester, the university has launched a website, Power-On Learning, with a comprehensive list of resources, tools, and tips to help you including information on learning tools, internet access, online learning tips, student success online workshops, and a laptop loaner program. In addition, the UH Campus Technology store, Cougar Byte, offers students discounts on laptops, software, and accessories. At the GCSW, Haydee Rodriguez and Courtney Wilson are available to support you.

Study Space, Computer Lab and Printing

Currently, the Social Work building study spaces and computer lab are not accessible to students. Study spaces and printing services are available in the UH MD Anderson Library. The library which has computers, printers, and copiers will be open every day, with varying hours. Find out more on their website

UH Student Centers

The UH Student Centers reopen Monday, August 10 with reduced hours from 7 am– 7 pm, Monday–Saturday. Here you can find dining options, the UH Bookstore and additional study spaces.

UH Sugar Land Campus

Students in any of the MSW enrollment models can also go to the UH Sugar Land campus at which study spaces and a computer lab, with printers, are available. Masks and social distancing are required.

UH Welcome Center (Financial Aid, Student Business Services, University Registrar)

The Welcome Center which includes the University Registrar, Scholarships and Financial Aid, and Student Business Services will have limited services available 8 am – 5 pm Monday through Thursday and 9 am – 5 pm on Fridays during the fall. In-person and virtual appointments are available. See the Welcome Center Website for more information.
