Provost Paula Short and Vice President for Research Amr Elnashai hosted a town hall this week to show progress on five major university measures that are part of UH's 50-in-5 initiative: publications, citations, grant submissions and awards, and research expenditures.
UH has invested more than $35 million in the initiative to fund faculty startups, equipment, new research institutes, center proposal coordination and infrastructure. More than $4 million in internal awards are available now to support faculty research, scholarship and innovation.
In addition, several new faculty success recognition events have been created, including those to celebrate major publications/performances, grant awards of more than $1 million, and society awards and fellowships. These will be in addition to the annual patent awards luncheon held every spring.
Provost Short and VPR Elnashai also announced another major project during the town hall: UH's first digital art installation. Scholar's Walk, as it's been named, will be a set of digital screens between the MD Anderson Library and the Student Center that showcase faculty success stories. The initiative is sponsored by the Provost's office and is slated to launch in Fall 2020.
