VP Message

At the University of Houston, we are fortunate to be part of an economy that incubates and accelerates entrepreneurship and innovation. Houston and Texas are extremely active in research and development, especially in the areas of energy, health, infrastructure and their confluence with information technology, finance and trade. Our ecosystem is also home to many business startups, supported by the numerous accelerator and incubator efforts throughout the region.

UH is situated at the center of all this activity – and is centrally involved in it. Our rapidly growing innovation ecosystem pairs the best research ideas with the strongest business ideas to foster startups and move technologies into commercialization. The UH Division of Research has partnered with the UH Wolff Center for Entrepreneurship, Houston Technology Center, Enventure and Houston Fannin Studio, to name a few, on programs and events to further the growth of these activities on campus. It’s definitely an exciting time at UH!

Speaking of growth, we are also pleased announce the opening of our new Innovation Lab to support proof-of-concept testing on promising technologies. Paired with our Innovation Center, UH now provides very competitive incubator space to support fast-moving startups in the Houston area. Located at the UH Energy Research Park, these incubators will contribute to the synergistic business and research activity already underway at the park, strengthening UH has a hub for entrepreneurship.

Beyond our efforts to spur technology innovation, I am excited to share this issue of Research & Innovation Magazine with you. In this issue, we explore the amazing breadth of innovation and scholarly activities underway at UH. From the birth of an idea to the development of transformative programs or technologies, UH faculty, staff and students have captured the spirit of entrepreneurship.
