Trips

The Outdoor Adventure trip program offers several outdoor trips per year ranging from day trips to week-long adventures. Our highly trained and experienced trip leaders will guide you through places like backpacking at Big Bend National Park! If you are looking for an adventure closer to home, the Farmers Market Bike Tour is the perfect way to see a different side of Houston. There are plenty of weekend trips that are strategically planned around the stressful times of each semester so take some time to unwind and let us show you a real Outdoor Adventure. *Note: Participants can sign up for trips via myrec.uh.edu or visit the Welcome Desk - Member Services; Payment is due upon registration. Participants will receive a confirmation email from Outdoor Adventure with additional trip paperwork within 5-business days. Trip spots are available on a first-come-first-serve basis and fill quickly. If you would like to sign up for a trip, sign up early to ensure a spot is still available.

Trips 

Exploring the night skies at Brazos Bend State Park

Date: Saturday, September 24 – Sunday, September 25

Deadline: Sunday, September 18

Depart from UH: 9:00 am

Location: Needville, TX

Description: Ever been camping? No problem! We will teach you the basics of camping and outdoor cooking. We will even provide you with all the equipment you need to have a great time!

Come join the fun as we explore the sky on a hike through 1.7-miles of lush greenery and beautiful marsh wetlands as the evening turns the night. We will also visit the George Observatory which offers a view of the night sky you can’t get from anywhere else in Houston.

Camping & S’mores

Date: Friday, October 14 – Saturday, October 15

Time: 7:00 p.m.

Deadline: Wednesday, October 12

Location: Houston, TX (on-campus)

Description: Do you want to get to know your UH community members better and build long-lasting relationships? Join us on this fun one-night weekend getaway where we will be camping on-campus. Here you will learn all the basics of camping, such as how to pitch a tent, in a fun and comfortable environment. We will spend the night playing classic camping games such as Mafia, Around the World, Uno, Werewolf, etc. We will also be cooking s’mores around the campfire where you can plan to bring instruments to sing campfire songs or simply spend hours having conversations and telling stories.

Camping at Dinosaur Valley State Park

Date: Saturday, October 29 – Sunday, October 30

Description: Life found a way millions of years ago for the dinosaurs, but now all that’s left of them are fossils and footprints. Wouldn’t that be an awesome area to hike around in? Now you have the opportunity with our hiking and camping trip at Dinosaur Valley State Park! Join us as we camp at this historic park and trek through the forests that were once home to gargantuan forms of life. While we explore the park and observe the wildlife that currently resides there, our experienced trip leaders will explain the history of the dinosaurs that used to roam this land and the impact they had on the ecosystem. When the rivers are dry, it is possible to see the prints left by these prehistoric creatures so that we may further understand their lives and biology. This park is a must-see for any curious anthropologist or just a casual hiker looking for something unique.

Camping Buffalo National River

Date: Thursday, November 24- Sunday, November 27

Location: Jasper, Arkansas

Description: What’s better than going on a trip? Going on a trip, learning new skills and enjoying scenic grounds while on break! If you don’t have any plans this thanksgiving then join us as we visit Buffalo national river Arkansas! Located 2 hours north of Little Rock this monumental waterway is the nation’s first national river. During our long weekend stay, we will be hiking around this stunning landscape, as you learn about the geology, history and wildlife that define this region. When we’re not hiking our experienced trip leaders will teach you the basics of tent building, fire starting and camp cooking. Our staff will handle all the logistics so all you need to do is take in everything nature has to offer! If you want to make all your friends and family jealous join us this November to broaden your horizons about outdoor adventure!

Standup Paddleboard & Sunset Yoga

Date: Friday, September 16

Location: Galveston, TX

Description: We’ve got good news for you! Join UH Outdoor Adventure and Fitness on this sunset yoga and standup paddling experience! You’ll start followed by learning the basics of standup paddle boarding and about 2 hours out in the water to try out your new skills followed by an hour of yoga at dusk and enjoying the fresh air. It is a great trip to get you moving and enjoying some time at the beach!

Canoeing at Armand Bayou

Date: Saturday, October 1st

Deadline: Wednesday, September 28

Location: Houston, TX

Description: Experience the wild at Armand Bayou! As one of the few pristine waterways remaining in the Houston area, this trip will lead you through the vibrant coastal tallgrass prairie and wetlands that are home to a variety of native wildlife! Frequently spotted species include Alligators, Herons, White-Tail Deer, Mullet Fish, Wild Hogs and more!

On this trip down the Bayou you will learn the basics of canoeing before a 2 ½ - 3 ½ hour paddle journey to observe an abundance of nature and wildlife scenery.

Kayaking at Clear Lake

Date: Saturday, October 15th

Description: Are you dying for some kayaking in our great Bayou City? We have the cure! Join us as we take a 35-minute evening trip down to Clear Lake and enjoy the lush greenery and aquatic wildlife that inhabit the water, this paddling trip won’t disappoint those looking to get more comfortable in the outdoors. We will learn the basics of how to safely navigate and operate your kayak before we experience one of Houston’s great waterways.

Hiking at McKinney Falls

Date: Friday, September 23

Description: Positioned within Austin city limits lies the urban oasis of McKinney Falls State Park. The park is widely known for the beautiful rivers that flow across fossil-rich limestone beds, waterfalls that cascade down river ledges and the strong connection to both the ancient and more recent history of Texas. Come hike this lively landscape of winding trails through the Texas Hill Country as you escape the busy city life and relax to the sounds of nature.

Hiking at Huntsville State Park

Date: Friday, October 28

Location: Huntsville, TX

Description: Join us on a 6.8-mile hike on the Chinquapin Trail through the serene pine trees and marshes where you can unplug and slow down.

This trail encircles Lake Raven where shorebirds, nutria and alligators are frequently spotted.

Farmer’s Market Bike Ride

Date: Saturday, October 8

Description: Explore Houston secrets that you might drive by every day. City bicycling is healthy, economical, great for our environment, and not as hard as you think! Our experienced cyclists will teach you everything you need to know about biking in the great city of Houston! We will ride an easygoing 20 miles, all while uncovering amazing gems about our city that often go unnoticed. It’s fun, relaxing, and perfect for anyone wanting some outdoor recreation!

Mountain Biking at Brazos Bend State Park

Date: Saturday, November 5

Description: Are you ready for a “wild” experience? Brazos Bend State Park has exactly what you are looking for and is just a short distance away! Brazos Bend is located just 45 miles from downtown Houston! We will explore this nature lover’s paradise by leisurely mountain biking through 10 miles of lush greenery and beautiful marsh wetlands. Wildlife frequently spotted include alligators, turtles, wading birds, fish and more!

Difficulty: Beginner-Intermediate

Walk down Walker Street

Date: Friday, October 7th

Time: 11:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.

Location: Houston, TX

Description: Houston is known as the Bayou City, but there is much more to experience in this diverse city. Join us as we explore the beauty of downtown Houston when we take a stroll down Walker Street. Starting at Discovery Green, we will make our way through the streets and down into Houston’s underground tunnel system. This tunnel system is a hidden gem of Houston and runs over 6 miles long, connecting 95 city blocks! These historic tunnels are filled with shops and walkways that provide a pedestrian-friendly way to navigate downtown. We will walk to our destination of Sam Houston Park to admire the charming park before making our way back to Discovery Green and then to UH.

Walk the Buffalo Bayou Park Trails

Description: Hiking, canoeing, and camping can be a little daunting for some less experienced outdoor enthusiasts, so we like to take it easy from time to time. If you would like a nice, calming journey, please join us as we stroll through the trails at Buffalo Bayou Park. Located just 6 miles west of main campus, Buffalo Bayou Park is downtown Houston’s hidden gem, offering a pedestrian-friendly way to spend the day hiking, relaxing near the waterfront, or taking your dog on a walk. The parks and trails that make up this 2.3-mile-long recreation destination provides ample room to clear your mind and enjoy the nature that makes the outdoors such an important part of our community.

Frequently Asked Questions

All current members of the CRWC are eligible to enroll in a trip – This includes students enrolled in classes and individual memberships. Registrants can bring a guest at the non-member rate.

Yes, if you are a student currently enrolled in the class or have an individual membership and enroll in a trip, you may bring a guest along. On outings, the guest fee is listed as “non-member” and requires a higher cost than members.

Yes, you must be 18 years old or a current UH student.

Each semester varies, but OA strives to offer a variety of options – backpacking, biking, climbing, hiking, canoeing, camping, and kayaking

The trips vary in length – from local day trips to statewide weekend trips to nationwide week-long trips. The goal of each semester is to incorporate an assortment of day and weekend trips with a culminating multi-day trip during the scheduled school break.

The cost varies depending upon several factors – mostly the required travel distance and length of the trip.

When applicable, the cost includes instruction, transportation, entrance fees, meals, and equipment.

For the majority of trips, no experience is necessary. On some adventures, such as climbing or biking longer distances, some experience would be beneficial, but not mandatory. Before each trip begins, the OA trip leader will instruct on the technical skills required for the adventure. There will also be a pre-trip meeting for overnight trips. Participants are able to host one guest (a person that does not have a campus rec membership) per trip they are attending. Guests can be registered at the welcome desk or via myrec.uh.edu by creating their own account.
