The Chilean Judicial System and its Effectiveness in Resolving Shareholder Disputes

Professor Manterola will present an overview of the Chilean judicial system and how it deals with conflicts between shareholders of closely-held corporations. The presentation will critically describe the remedies available for minority shareholders, and address the implications of mandatory arbitration in majority abuse cases, highlighting similarities and differences between U.S. and Chilean law.

Professor Manterola is a faculty member at the Universidad de los Andes in Chile, and holds a Licensure in Law from the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile and a Ph.D. in Law from Universidad de los Andes, where he is also co-director of the Business Law LL.M. Program. His main area of teaching and research is corporate law, and his activities as a Visiting Scholar with UHLC are sponsored by the Chilean National Agency for Research and Development (ANID).
