Dr. Paula Myrick Short, UH System senior vice chancellor for academic affairs and UH senior vice president for academic affairs and provost, was inducted as an honorary member of Phi Beta Delta Honor Society for International Scholars at the UH chapter’s induction ceremony on April 19, 2018. Phi Beta Delta is the first honor society dedicated to recognizing scholarly achievement in international education. Dr. Jaime Ortiz, Vice Provost UH Global commended the induction of Provost Myrick Short “based on her determined commitment and stalwart support to advance the international footprint of the University of Houston to become a truly global institution of higher education.”
The Delta Iota chapter of Phi Beta Delta was formed at the University of Houston in May of 1998 with the mission of promoting international scholarship, bridging cultures, and demanding excellence through the recognition and enhancement of opportunities for scholarly achievement. The chapter has been actively involved in supporting students through scholarship, organizing gatherings of its diverse membership, and through the recognition of outstanding academic or administrative work by its members. The chapter has been recognized nationally through the Outstanding Regional Chapter Award and the Eileen M. Evans Overall Outstanding Chapter Award.
“I am honored to be included as a member of such a prestigious organization” said Paula Myrick Short. “As senior vice president for academic affairs and provost, it is my mission to further the globalization of the University of Houston, and the efforts of the Delta Iota Chapter of Phi Beta Delta help further that mission.”
The idea for formally recognizing the academic achievements of international scholars began at California State University - Long Beach in February of 1986 with the formation of the Phi Beta Delta national organization. Soon after, other universities became interested in forming their own chapters and Phi Beta Delta was established as a national honor society.
