Cougar Health Research Academy

Interested in a career in public health?

Would you like to serve as a volunteer in your community in public health preparedness and disasters?

A new online program offered by the UH College of Pharmacy's Institute of Community Health and the Houston Health Department provides UH undergraduate students with the skills, knowledge and tools used in the public health field. The program will prepare participants to volunteer in their communities as part of public health preparedness and natural disaster management efforts as well as exposure to a variety of career opportunities in public health.

The four-week program runs June 5-July 1, with a time commitment of approximately 24 hours per week. Participants are eligible for a $1,000 stipend upon successful completion of the program.

Applications are due by April 30, 2022. Successful applicants will be notified by May 15; applicants who have not received a response by May 15 should assume they were not accepted into the program.

Participants will gain knowledge and skills taught by UHCOP Department of Pharmaceutical Health Outcomes and Policy faculty members in such areas as:

  • Epidemiology and Biostatistics;
  • Qualitative and Quantitative Research Designs;
  • Communication and Motivational Interviewing in Health Research; and
  • Ethical Issues in Health Research.

In addition, participants will engage in observations/exercises, skills training and tutorials, practice sessions and group assignments through the Houston Health Department related to:

  • Epidemiology and Disease Reporting;
  • Disease Prevention and Control;
  • Environmental and Consumer Health Services;
  • Immunizations;
  • Laboratory Services; and
  • Public Health Preparedness and Disaster Management.
