Computer Science Launches Specialized M.S. Degree Tracks
Tracks to Build Expertise in High-Demand Domains

The Department of Computer Science at University of Houston revamped its M.S. program by introducing multiple tracks to the program starting Fall 2013. The tracks system allows students to streamline the courses taken and develop in-depth knowledge in domains in high demand by industry.

Each track defines four to six specialist courses to be taken for thesis/non-thesis students in a particular topic area.

The following specialized tracks are currently being offered:

• Data Analytics
• Interactive Media
• Parallel and Distributed Systems

A general track on Core Computer Science is also offered for students interested in developing broad expertise in fundamentals of computer science.

“The tracks initiative was taken to better match the knowledge and skills of our M.S. graduates to job openings locally and nationwide. Our goal is to better serve our students and make the M.S. degree more valuable and attractive, especially to current practitioners in industry,” said Edgar Gabriel, director of graduate studies and associate professor of computer science.

More tracks are expected to be added in the future in emerging areas of computing based on employer demand.
