Guoning Chen Joins Computer Science Faculty
Area of Expertise: Scientific Data Visualization and Analysis

Guoning ChenWe are pleased to welcome Dr. Guoning Chen to the Department of Computer Science at University of Houston as an assistant professor. He joined UH at the beginning of the fall 2012 semester.

Guoning was a postdoctoral scholar at the Scientific Computing and Imaging Institute at the University of Utah. He received a Ph.D. from the Oregon State University. His expertise is in scientific data visualization and analysis. Guoning’s addition to the faculty will further strengthen the research and teaching of the already strong visual computing direction of the department.

“Scientific visualization is now a powerful tool in helping domain experts from various scientific and engineering areas understand and present their large scale and complex simulation and experimental data,” Guoning said. “This in turn affects our understanding of the world and helps develop strategies and techniques to improve our life and protect our world.”

His current research interests include vector-valued and tensor-valued data analysis and visualization. They are both common data forms stemming from a wide variety of engineering and scientific applications, such as computational fluid dynamics, automotive and aircraft design, mechanical engineering, climate study, oceanography, earthquake engineering, fusion science, and medical practice. His research has resulted in a number of effective and robust techniques that help visualize, analyze and manipulate these complex data to assist the domain expert’s daily work.

Guoning is interested in working with faculty and students who have “data visualization issues” to further advance the visualization and analysis techniques for scientific data and other data forms.
