IMED Computational Desk for Surgeons

Abstract

Endovascular intervention with angioplasty and stenting has become very common in the recent years. Further, endovascular surgery uses technologies such as medical imaging or hemodynamic, modeling and simulation of vessel biomechanics, that keep evolving rapidly. The use of simulations together with medical images and doctor interventions can help the doctors in making more accurate decisions in endovascular surgery. The challenge is to build a standalone system that assists with patient specific surgery planning and accumulate postprocedure data. This thesis introduces IMED (computational desk for surgeons), which provides a friendly interface to manage the workflow of surgery planning. IMED assists with the training of a medical resident or as a companion to the clinical practice of a surgeon. The benefits of our system include availability of information in the same database, efficient management of the medical images and simulation data along with the annotations, intuitive and friendly interface, and the highly scalable and efficient framework which will allow extension and modification of IMED to other types of surgery training or planning.
