HOUSTON HOSTS GLOBAL MUSIC SUMMIT DURING
UH’S TEXAS MUSIC FESTIVAL
Houston already has a reputation as an international city, but
during June, it will go musically global.
Musicians from around the world will descend on the University
of Houston for the 2007 Immanuel and Helen Olshan Texas Music Festival
(TMF).
Each year, TMF delivers four weeks of concerts, clinics and classes
that attract a collection of world-renowned musicians and rising
young talents. This year’s festival runs May 29 – June
30 at the University of Houston and at selected off-campus locations.
In 1990, Houston arts patrons Immanuel and Helen Olshan founded
the festival as a four-week orchestral fellowship program dedicated
to developing the talents of student musicians. Since then, TMF
has attracted students from around the globe and entertained local
audiences with performances ranging from chamber music to jazz.
“The talent that this festival brings to campus is amazing,”
said David Ashley White, director of the Moores School of Music.
“Having so many brilliant musical minds in one area for four
weeks energizes the university and the city, and it just gets better
and better each year.”
Distinguished MSM faculty members are among the professionals overseeing
TMF’s clinics and master classes. Other participants include
members of the Houston Symphony and visiting artists. Students are
accepted to the festival based on live and taped auditions.
TMF performances include concerts from the Texas Music Festival
Orchestra, Texas Musical Festival Jazz Project, the “Classical
Minds” Guitar Institute and “Floot Fire” Flute
Institute. Ticket prices for performances vary, and some are free
for the public. For ticket information, call the Moores box office
at (713) 743-3313.
