BEYOND THE HORIZON: UH OFFERS DAY OF LEARNING
FOR ALUMNI AND FRIENDS
University of Houston alumni and friends interested in rekindling
the excitement felt as a student will have the opportunity to attend
UH Alumni College: Beyond the Horizon on Saturday, May 20.
For this one-day event, alumni and friends of the university can
take courses in literature, economics, engineering and history.
Throughout the day, eight courses will be offered by some of the
university’s best known professors. Participants will attend
their choice of five courses during the day, to be followed by finals
and graduation in the afternoon. Registration fees are $49 for Houston
Alumni Organization members and $90 for member couples, and $54
for non-members, $100 for non-member couples. Registration is available

“Alumni College is an opportunity for people to take classes
from some of our most celebrated faculty members,” said Steve
Hall, Houston Alumni Organization president and CEO. “Participants
will relive the thrill of the classroom without the pressure of
exams.”
Classes will be held in the new, world-class Science and Engineering
Research and Classroom Complex. They are:
- Shakespeare, Our Contemporary – Director of the UH School
of Theater Sidney Berger will examine “Hamlet” and
why it is perhaps the greatest classic in world literature.
- Texas Hold’em – Carl A. Boger, associate dean of
academics at the Hilton College of Hotel and Restaurant Management,
will demonstrate networking and team building, and examine the
effectiveness of market signals
- Literature and Hope: Performance of Healing in Black Women’s
Plays – Professor of English, playwright, and performing
artist Elizabeth Brown-Guillory will present a lecture and performance
offering an overview of black women’s theater.
- Enron: A Case Study of Corporate Decay – Darren Bush,
assistant professor of law, will examine Enron and the corporate
scandal currently the subject of criminal and civil litigation.
- Building a High-Performance Sales and Relationship Management
Organization – The Sales Excellence Institute’s Executive
Director Eli Jones will discuss some of the significant changes
occurring with regard to sales and sales management.
- Steam Power before James Watt – John H. Lienhard, M.D.
Anderson Professor Emeritus of Mechanical Engineering and History,
will cover material from his latest book “How Invention
Begins: Echoes of Old Voices in the Rise of New Machines.”
- A Look Back at Houston’s History – Cullen Professor
of History and Business Joseph A. Pratt will discuss the intersection
of two specialties – the impact of oil on the history of
the Houston area.
- The Economic Impact of UH on the Greater Houston area and Texas
– Barton A. Smith, director of the Institute for Regional
Forecasting, will address the widening gap between supply and
demand for the highly skilled and educated.
