TIME TRIP LEADS TO SELF-DISCOVERY IN UH’S
UNIQUE COMEDY ‘ON THE VERGE’
Three female explorers embark on a trek around the globe, but wind
up traveling through time and space. During the course of this fantastic
journey, there are numerous discoveries, but their greatest find
is actually themselves.
Audiences can tag along on this unique expedition as the University
of Houston’s School of Theatre will present Eric Overmyer’s
innovative comedy “On the Verge” March 31 – April
1 and April 7 – 9 in UH’s Wortham Theatre.
First produced in 1985, “On the Verge” follows a trio
of Victorian-era trekkers on a trip to Terra Incognita. As the trio
makes its way through rainforests and over mountains, the play’s
dialogue proves to be as adventurous as the characters’ travels.
“The language of this play is incredibly engaging,”
said director Brian Byrnes, associate professor of theater. “The
script touches on a variety of issues, but it’s very much
about self actualization. It’s also extremely poetic.”
To capture the essence of the exotic and imaginary settings, the
play’s single set will employ lights and video projections.
“This set is a symbol of exploration, time and space,”
Byrnes said. “There is only one set, but it will transform
into whatever it needs to be. It’s quite stunning.”
General admission tickets for are $15; $12 for UH faculty, staff
and alumni; $10 for seniors or groups of 10 or more, and $7 for
students. Ticket information can be obtained by calling the Wortham
