TRADING SPACES: UH’S MOORES OPERA
CENTER REDESIGNS ‘A ROOM WITH A VIEW’
E.M. Forster’s classic novel “A Room with a View”
became an award-winning film in 1985. Thanks to two University of
Houston music professors, the comedic tale of a woman torn between
passion and societal conventions found another home on the opera
stage.
UH’s Edythe Bates Old Moores Opera Center will kick off its
latest production of “A Room with a View” at 7:30 p.m.
Friday, April 8, in the Moores Opera House. The opera will be performed
in English with English surtitles.
Buck Ross, the center’s director, wrote the libretto and
Robert Nelson, professor of composition and music theory, composed
the musical score. Their combined energies have translated the whimsical
romance of Forster’s book into a musical extravaganza.
“This has always been a big, lush romantic story, so it’s
a natural fit for an opera,” Ross said.
Ross and Nelson debuted “A Room with a View” at UH
in 1993. The opera tells the story of Lucy Honeychurch, a well-to-do
Englishwoman who journeys to Italy and unexpectedly finds love with
George Emerson, a young man lacking in social status, but rich in
the ways of romance.
“The opera follows the book very closely,” Ross said.
“Forster’s novel relies on dialogue rather than descriptive
passages, so it lends itself to dramatic adaptation.”
