Zhengwei Li, Ph.D., serves as a Joint Assistant Professor in the Department of Biomedical Sciences at the Tilman J. Fertitta Family College of Medicine. He is working to develop engineering novel techniques including cutting-edge wearable technologies designed for remote health and wellness, and to prevent and manage diseases. He is also responsible for mentoring Fertitta Family College of Medicine students in education and research.

Li is also an assistant professor in the Department of Biomedical Engineering at the UH Cullen College of Engineering.

His research interests focus on the interface between engineering and biology to create novel materials, devices and robotics for a wide range of health care and biomedical applications. Specifically, Li’s current research focuses on the design and fabrication of 3D wearable electronics, biohybrid living robotics (‘Bio-bots’) and biomedical devices.

Prior to joining UH, Li was a postdoctoral fellow at the Querrey Simpson Institute for Bioelectronics at Northwestern University. There, he worked on the design and fabrication of wireless wearable electronics for health care and biomedical applications.

His work has been published in numerous prestigious journals, including PNAS, Nature Electronics, Science Advances, Nature Communications, Biomaterials, Biofabrication, Advanced Materials, Nature Protocols, Scientific Reports and Nanotechnology.

Li received his doctorate in mechanical engineering – with the highest honor – in 2017 from the University of Colorado Boulder. He earned his master’s degree in 2012 from Zhejiang University and bachelor’s degree in 2009 from Huazhong University of Science and Technology, both in China. He also gained postdoctoral research training experience in the development of biohybrid robotics at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
