Raj Kumar, Ph.D.

Raj Kumar, Ph.D., is a clinical professor of biochemistry for the Tilman J. Fertitta Family College of Medicine. Kumar contributes to various courses including Reproductive and Endocrine, Gastrointestinal System and Nutrition, and Scientific Foundation of Medicine as its co-director. In addition, Kumar is implementing, designing and improving the curriculum. He also serves as a liaison with students and faculty, ensuring students meet specific milestones.

Prior to joining the Fertitta Family College of Medicine, Kumar was a tenured professor at Geisinger Commonwealth School of Medicine for more than 10 years and served as director of research. He has more than 18 years of medical and graduate school teaching experience and is well-versed in various teaching and assessment methods. As a founding faculty member at Geisinger Commonwealth School of Medicine, Kumar was an integral part of medical school strategic plans, development of new programs and accreditation activities including the accreditation processes of the Liaison Committee on Medical Education and Middle States Commission on Higher Education.

Kumar has co-authored more than 100 publications, including research articles in high-impact journals, invited reviews/book chapters, books and patents. Kumar’s publications are highly cited and he has received several research grant funds, including National Institutes of Health (NIH) RO1s. He has spoken at numerous engagements; served as an editorial board member or scientific reviewer for several journals; served on several grant review panels, including NIH and the National Science Foundation; and established several research collaborations at national and international levels.

Kumar earned a Ph.D. in neurotoxicology from University of Lucknow in India and completed his post-doctoral training at The University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston.
