Sophia L. Torres



Sophia L. Torres (adjunct faculty) is the Co-Founder and Artistic Director of Psophonia Dance Company. She has choreographed over twenty original works under Psophonia and has received awards and recognition for her innovative choreography including the Artist Fellowship Award in Choreography and three Artist Project Awards for arts in education programming from Houston Arts Alliance. Since graduating from the High School for the Performing and Visual Arts and Southern Methodist University, Torres has performed with several outstanding companies and worked with such talented choreographers as Bill T. Jones, Susan Marshall and Stephan Koplowitz. Sophia has created new works for Rice University’s Dance Theatre, University of Houston’s Dance Ensemble and Houston Community College’s Performing Ensemble. Most recently, Sophia was awarded the prestigious Teaching Artist Fellowship from Montalvo Arts Center in Saratoga, California - one of four awarded nationwide. Currently she is on faculty at the University of Houston and Houston Community College Northwest. She remains actively involved in arts in education programming in Houston through partnerships with Young Audiences of Houston, Stages Repertory Theater and Harris County Department of Education.
