High School Keyboard Academy

Come attend a fantastic, two-week immersion program for high school keyboardists of all levels taught by Moores School of Music professors! Each student receives applied lessons on their principal instrument as well as the opportunity for elective studies in piano, organ, harpsichord, and fortepiano.
Special topics throughout the Academy include:
- collaborative techniques
- keyboard technique
- improvising
- arranging
- chamber music
- keyboard literature
- piano and organ technology
- and a unique course, Music and the Mind.
In addition to individual practice time, students will have the opportunity to perform in daily masterclasses, attend presentations on various subjects and evening concerts including TMF Piano Series, TMF faculty chamber music, Keyboard Academy faculty recitals and perform on Academy recitals at 11:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m on Saturday, June 24.
FACULTY:
All keyboard faculty members are professors at the Moores School of Music. Psychologist Greg Beaulieu and pianist Tali Morgulis will lead the course Music and the Mind.

Students will have the opportunity to attend Texas Music Festival (TMF) concerts featuring:
Vadym Kholodenko, opening night soloist- Vadym Kholodenko is fast building a reputation as one of the most musically dynamic and technically gifted young pianists, praised in his performance with the Philadelphia Orchestra “for his absorbing melodic shading [and] glittering passage work” (Philadelphia Enquirer). Winner of the 2013 Cliburn Competition, Kholodenko captivated audiences and critics alike, with the Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra immediately appointing him their first Artist-in-Partnership for three years.
Awadagin Pratt, recital and masterclass - Among his generation of concert artists, pianist Awadagin Pratt is acclaimed for his musical insight and intensely involving performances in recitals and symphony orchestras. Mr. Pratt is currently a Professor of Piano at the College-Conservatory of Music at the University of Cincinnati. He also served a the Artistic Director of the World Piano Competition in Cincinnati and is currently the Artistic Director of the Art of the Piano Festival at CCM.
Amy Jiaqi Yang, recital and masterclass - A “jaw-dropping pianist who steals the show…with effortless finesse" (Washington Post), Amy Yang balances an active career as a soloist, chamber musician, and pedagogue. She is the Associate Dean of Piano Studies and Artistic Initiatives at the Curtis Institute of Music. Aiming to lead a life rich in learning, she would love to spend more time studying painting, neuroscience, and gardening.

Dates: June 10-24, 2023. Orientation: Saturday, June 10 at 4:00 p.m. in Room 118 of the Moores School of Music Building, 3333 Cullen Boulevard, Houston, TX 77204-4017.
Application information: Applications are now open to keyboard students who are 15–18 years of age. Fill out the online Application Form at Acceptd and pay the $60 application fee. Upload a video file containing two prepared pieces.
Fees (all fees are non-refundable):
Application fee: $60. Acceptd application deadline: April 1, 2023.
Tuition: $1,100 for the two-week academy, including daily lunch. Due through Acceptd by May 10.
Housing: $822 (optional): Participants are encouraged to stay in the dorms for the full, immersive experience of the Academy and the Texas Music Festival concerts and musical offerings. Includes double room in 4 person suite, with shared bath and full meal service in UH Cougar Village I. Due through Acceptd by May 10, with tuition payment.
