SHRL Celebrates National First-Generation College Student Day

November 8 is National First-Generation College Student Day.

First-generation college students are students who come from households where neither parent/guardian has a bachelor’s degree or higher. At UH, 43% of the student population is considered first-generation. Many first-generation college students experience unique challenges as they embark upon their collegiate journey.

Below you will find a list of programs and events planned in support of National First-Generation College Student Day:

November 8

SHRL First-Generation Professional Staff Showcase Kickoff

Each day professional staff members who identify as first-generation will be featured on UH Housing social media platforms.

SHRL Student Staff Social Media Takeover

Each day a student staff member will take over the social media account to share their experiences as a first-generation student.

November 10

First-Generation Trivia Night

Residents who identify as first-generation students will be able to learn more about campus resources, connect with other first-generation students, and win cool prizes.

November 11 at 3pm – 4pm

SHRL FG Sweet Treat Bag Giveaway

Residents who identify as first-generation will receive an “I am first – generation” door decoration and sweet treat bags delivered to their residential community.

November 12

First-Generation Alumni Panel

Residents who identify as first-generation students will learn tips and advice from first-generation professionals across the division about graduate school, job searching, and ways to get connected with mentors.
