Summer Internship at the United States Capitol Office of U.S. Representative Filemon
Vela, Jr.
Advisor: Dr. Jeffrey Church
Sophomore and Political Science major Julie Balogh is pursuing her passion for service and leadership through a summer internship in the D.C. congressional office of Congressman Filemon Vela, Jr. Julie has long been interested in politics, in particular welfare reform, education reform, and immigration policies. Her interest and initiative resulted in a previous internship in the summer of 2015 with Texas Representative Eddie Lucio III. Having the opportunity with Congressman Filemon Vela, Jr. is particularly beneficial given that his political focus is on immigration policies. Julie will have the opportunity to attend congressional hearings, policy briefings, and committee meetings, as well as to conduct research for legislative aides, write policy briefs, and respond to constituent inquiries.
Future Direction: As this is a presidential election year, Julie will observe history in the making and may have occasion to assist with presidential campaigning at the nation’s capital – a singular opportunity and certainly one that will set her apart as she pursues future career and life goals, which include achieving a law degree and remaining active in politics.
