Robert Zaretsky specializes in French history when not teaching in The Human Situation. His books include Nîmes at War (Penn State University 1995), Cock and Bull Stories: Folco de Baroncelli and the Invention of the Camargue (Nebraska 2004), and with John Scott, The Philosophers' Quarrel: Rousseau, Hume, and the Limits of Human Understanding (Yale 2009). His most recent books are Albert Camus: Elements to a Life (Cornell 2010) and, with Alice Conklin and Sarah Fishman, France and its Empire Since 1870 (Oxford 2010). In 2013, Harvard University Press published "A Life Worth Living: Albert Camus and the Quest for Meaning," and "Boswell's Enlightenment" in 2015. Next year, Harvard will also publish "Catherine and Diderot: A Ruler, A Thinker and the Fate of the Enlightenment." Zaretsky is now writing a book for University of Chicago Press on the thought and life of Simone Weil. He serves as the history editor for the Los Angeles Review of Books and is a frequent contributor to the New York Times, Los Angeles Times, Foreign Policy, Times Higher Education Magazine and Chronicle of Higher Education.
