Meet the 2007 Mickey Leland Congressional Interns

Bethany Everett

Bethany Everett is a senior at the University of Houston majoring in political science, with a minor in women studies. She is a member of the Young Republicans and she actively volunteers with various youth agencies. Bethany plans on attending Harvard Law School, specializing in international law. With this degree she hopes to work within a United States Embassy as a diplomat, and then as a United States Ambassador.

Bethany is working in the office of Congressman Ted Poe.


Elizabeth Fernandez

Elizabeth Fernandez was born and raised in Santa Ana, California. She moved to Houston in 2005 to complete her education at the University of Houston, and earned a Bachelor of Arts in political science and history in December 2006. Her previous political activities include a UH-HCPP internship in Harris County Commissioner Sylvia Garcia’s office and as an intern for the Chris Bell for Governor campaign. Elizabeth will attend California State University of Fullerton in the fall of 2007 to pursue a masters degree in political science.

Elizabeth is working in the office of Congresswoman Eddie Bernice Johnson.


Shelle Gordon

Shelle Gordon was born in Kingston, Jamaica and lived there for seven years before moving to Texas, living in Houston for most of her life. In 2002, Shelle graduated from Baylor University with a B.B.A. in marketing and international business. Shelle's international interest continues as she seeks to obtain a certificate in international and immigration law while attending Thurgood Marshall School of Law at Texas Southern University. She plans to make an impact in the community in the U.S. and internationally. One of Shelle's greatest ambitions is to serve in a diplomatic capacity.

Shelle is working in the office of Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee.


Husna Kapadia

Husna Kapadia was born in Mumbai, India and was raised in Houston. In December 2006, Husna graduated from the University of Houston with a bachelor of science in political science. Husna previously interned with the General Electric European Equipment finance's legal department in London. Her political experience includes interning with City Council Member Shelley Sekula-Gibbs M.D. Husna will begin law school in the fall of 2007.

Husna is working in the office of Congressman Gene Green.


Renee A. Mayo

Renée A. Mayo is a third-year law student at Thurgood Marshall School of Law at Texas Southern University. A New York City native, Renée graduated from Barnard College with a B.A. in political science. She relocated to Houston to pursue a career in education, teaching U.S. and African history at Episcopal High School and directing Summerbridge, a nonprofit program for talented and motivated middle school students. While at Thurgood Marshall, Renée has worked for the Earl Carl Institute for Legal and Social Policy, interned at the First Court of Appeals and studied abroad in Cape Town, South Africa. With an interest in public policy and international law, Renée aspires to work in national government and become a United States Ambassador.

Renée is working in the office of Congressman Al Green.


Shan Pasha

Shan Pasha is a senior at the University of Houston. He will earn a BA in political science and a minor in history in the summer of 2007. Shan is a graduate of the Texas Academy of Leadership in the Humanities where he concurrently finished high school and his first two years of college. Shan's studies continued abroad in Cairo where he took Arabic and Middle Eastern history courses. Shan plans to pursue a law degree and to work as an attorney.

Shan is working in the office of Congressman Nick Lampson.
