Join the UH College of Education for an empowering back-to-school kickoff event with nationally renowned writer and advocate Jose Antonio Vargas, a leading voice for the rights of immigrants.
The Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist, Emmy-nominated filmmaker and Tony-nominated producer didn’t realize he was undocumented until, at 16, he tried to apply for a learner’s permit to drive. His first book, “Dear America: Notes of an Undocumented Citizen,” weaves his personal story into a larger conversation about identity. “Tough as it was, coming out about being gay seemed less daunting than coming out about my legal status,” he wrote. Vargas, who runs the nonprofit Define American, earned a spot on Fortune’s “40 Under 40” most influential people in government and politics in 2020.
