Pyrophoric and water reactive materials can ignite spontaneously or react violently on contact with air, moisture in the air, oxygen, or water. Failure to follow proper handling procedures can result in fire or explosion, leading to serious injuries, death, and/or significant damage to facilities.
This Safety Awareness Training generally describes the hazards, control methods, proper storage, handling, disposal, and emergency procedures for working with pyrophoric and water reactive materials.
This Safety Awareness is mandatory for all UH personnel who directly work with or may be exposed to pyrophoric/water-reactive materials in the workplace, including those working in research, clinics, teaching laboratories, shops and facilities services. Handling of pyrophoric/water reactive materials are typically high risk activities and must be controlled with adequate system design, direct supervision, and hands-on training on lab-specific SOP.
This safety awareness training is offered through the new web-based training system. Please log in and select EH07 as the course you would like to take.
Additional Pyrophoric / Water-reactive Resources
In addition to the awareness training, EHS developed Guideline for Pyrophoric/Water-Reactive and Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) template. Both are posted on the Chemical Guidelines & SOP Templates section of this website. The PI or lab manager may adopt and modify the SOP to comply with the requirements of the UH Chemical Hygiene Plan.
