The University is much like a small city in terms of environmental compliance and it is Environmental Health & Life Safety’s (EHLS) function to maintain a high level of compliance with applicable regulations. There are requirements concerning air emissions, waste disposal and water quality from both the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) which impact the University. One method used to communicate to the UH community about the existence of these types of regulations is through the EHS’s Environmental Awareness Policy. The Campus Safety Health and Environmental Management Association (CSHEMA) in association with EPA and other college and university groups has established the Campus Environmental Resource Center. This is a web based compendium of best practices, latest rules, and guidance documents that can be used by colleges and universities to stay in maintain compliance.
