She applied to only one university, a private, out-of-state institution. She didn’t know how to navigate financial aid. And, ultimately, even though she wanted to become a journalist, she attended a college known for health professions.&#xD;
Wanting to support others like her, Gittens became an academic advisor in a newly created centralized office at her university, helping students get involved on campus, find jobs and internships, and successfully graduate. &#xD;
