COE Alumna Shows a ‘Relentless Pursuit of Education’

Jameisha BrownJameisha Brown has always known the importance of health and health promotion. Throughout her life, she watched her mother care for her disabled grandmother, and from the ages of eight to seventeen, she battled with and overcame Lymphoma. It’s no surprise that she has chosen to change the world by caring for the health of vulnerable and marginalized populations. And now, the College of Education alumna is making great strides in both helping others and further preparing herself for a career in public health.

Brown received her bachelor’s from the College of Education and currently works as the Managing Chief Equipping Officer of Health and Wellness Programming at Windsor Village United Methodist Church in Houston. She is working toward her doctorate at Texas A&M in College Station in the Department of Health Education and Kinesiology.

Brown’s childhood experiences with chronic illness – particularly her mother’s strength during times of stress – informed her outlook on life. “I aspire to emulate my mother’s kindheartedness, tireless advocacy and gentleness in caring for the health of vulnerable and marginalized populations,” says Brown, “and I am determined to live a life exemplary of determination and resilience.”

While pursuing her bachelor’s at the College of Education, Brown was an exemplary student. “Meisha is one of those students who is destined to achieve great things in life,” says Norma Olvera, one of Brown’s former professors. “She cares about public health and research, and more importantly, she cares about making a difference in people’s lives.” Her unflagging love of education has carried on as she’s worked her way through other institutions. Kimberly Parker, the chair of her thesis committee at Texas Woman’s University, says “Jameisha is the type of student that forces you to raise your level of expectations for those who come after her. She was so knowledgeable, vocal, and passionate about health disparities.”

After graduating and joining the workforce, Brown has kept busy. She actively participates in the ‘See, Test, and Treat Program,’ which provides women with free screenings for cervical and breast cancer.  Her supervisor at ‘See, Test, and Treat,’ Sonia Robazetti, is honored to be working with such an enthusiastic and dedicated young woman. “I have never met anyone with as much expertise and networking capability as Meisha,” says Robazetti. “She never disappoints me, and her relentless pursuit of education and her desire to help others is beautiful.”

We know Brown is going to make a great impact on the world, and we can’t wait to see what she does next. Meisha Brown, you make us Cougar Proud.
