2015 Action Alliance was a Great Success School Leaders: Strong Minds Creating a Vision

Joseph SchererThe University of Houston College of Education, the UH Alumni Association's Education Alumni and Houston A+ Challenge held the 2015 Action Alliance on January 22, 2015. The goal for the Action Alliance convening is to bring together the leaders of the P-20 Educational Pipeline in the Gulf Coast area to review impact/implications of HB 5 legislation. The guest speaker was Joseph Scherer, Executive Director of the Superintendents’ National Dialogue.

Sherer focused on why it is essential for school leaders to enter the public dialogue on education and the skills they will need to participate in this dialogue and how to develop those skills.

Panel Discussions

The Action Alliance convening included panel discussions with an HB 5 Update and Community Based Accountability. Panelist included: David Anthony, CEO, Raise Your Hand Texas; Dennis Brown, President Lee College; Mr. HD Chambers, Superintendent of Schools Alief ISD; Johnny Veselka Executive Director, Texas Association of School Administrators; and Duncan Klussmann, Superintendent of Schools Spring Branch ISD.

Amelia TukesOver 80 attendees were present at the event which included UH faculty, UH staff and Gulf Coast Area Administrators. All left with a vast knowledge of HB 5 legislation. “I appreciated that the College of Education hosted the Action Alliance event," said Amelia Tukes, Asstistant Principal – Alief ISD.  “I’m so proud to be a College of Education Alum and to be a proud UH Cougar!”
