Interim Associate Vice Chancellor/Associate Vice President for Student Affairs & Executive Director, University Career Services
Dr. Monica D. Thompson (she/her) has over 20 years of experience in career services, human resources, and higher education. Thompson has worked in corporate, nonprofit, banking, technology, and retail. Her areas of expertise include diversity and inclusion, organizational change, career development, career services programming, organizational learning and development, talent acquisition, management training, and human resources administration. She received her Doctor of Education (Ed.D) in Ethical Leadership with an emphasis on Social Justice from the University of St. Thomas. She focused her doctorate research on academic affairs and student affairs collaboration to increase experiential learning opportunities for undergraduate students. Thompson focused her dissertation topic on the University's Role in Development of Energy Career Readiness for Underrepresented STEM students. She also holds a Master of Science in human resources development from Texas A&M University and a bachelor's degree in business administration and management with a minor in accounting from Texas State University.
Monica is concurrently serving as interim associate vice president for student affairs and as the executive director of University Career Services in the Division of Student Affairs. Thompson was named to her new interim role on November 1, 2021, to oversee the division-wide functions of assessment and planning, communications and marketing, emergency preparedness, and academic partnerships. In her University Career Services' role, Thompson leads a team of 14 career services professionals that serve more than 47,000 students and more than 13,200 employers. Thompson has set a new vision for University Career Services to become a career-focused campus concentrating on creating a career development curriculum for UH students beginning their first year. Thompson also oversees the Center for Student Empowerment, coordinates the Division's services at the University of Houston at Sugar Land, and the University of Houston at Katy. She also serves on several campus committees, including the Faculty Senate's Undergraduate Committee, the Cougar Card Advisory Board, the SAM Policy Advisory Committee, and the Emergency Preparedness Committees. Monica has collaborated with university faculty members on experiential learning opportunities that target underrepresented populations such as African American and Latino students, who are interested in working in the health and energy fields. The faculty members include working with Dr. Erika Henderson's Next Gen Energy X program and Dr. Norma Olvera's BOUNCE and Eye to the Future programs.
