Drive Safe, Park Smart: Vehicle Theft Prevention Tips from UHPD

July is National Vehicle Theft Prevention Month, a time dedicated to raising awareness and promoting proactive steps to protect your vehicle.

At the University of Houston, students, faculty, and staff benefit from robust security measures provided by the University of Houston Police Department. UHPD patrols six parking garages, eight parking lots, and 16 gated lots. Additionally, surveillance technology such as the Sky Watch Tower—equipped with cameras—enhances visibility and monitoring across campus parking areas.

While these efforts significantly deter theft, individuals can take further action to safeguard their vehicles. Here are some practical tips to help keep your car secure both on and off campus:

Double-Check Your Doors:
Always physically confirm that all doors are locked before walking away from your vehicle.

Park in Well-Lit Areas:
Choose well-lit, high-traffic areas to park. Thieves are less likely to target vehicles in visible locations.

Don’t Leave Valuables in Sight:
Keep all valuables out of view—preferably locked in the trunk or taken with you—to avoid attracting unwanted attention.

Did You Know?
In 2024, 850,708 vehicles were stolen in the U.S.—a 17% decrease from the previous year, marking the largest annual drop in over 40 years.

Despite the decline, a vehicle was still stolen every 37 seconds.
By staying alert and following these tips, you can help reduce the risk of vehicle theft and contribute to a safer campus community.
