Diversity

Our Mission and Commitment

Embedded in one of the most diverse cities in the nation, The University of Houston is the second most diverse urban research institution in the United States. Within the Department of Psychology, diversity is one of our most important strengths. Among our large undergraduate population alone, more than 50% of students come from historically under-represented groups

Consistent with the University of Houston’s strong commitment to diversity and inclusion, the Department of Psychology values the benefits and responsibilities that arise from being part of such a diverse community. We are committed to cultivating and ensuring an inclusive, equitable environment both within the Department and in the field of Psychology more broadly – an environment that empowers all persons to reach their full potential.

The mission of the Department’s Diversity and Inclusion Committee is to ensure that diversity and inclusion are considered and represented within all aspects of the Department, including faculty, student, and staff recruitment, education and training, research activities, and support for individuals from under-represented groups. Graduates of our doctoral training programs acquire understanding and appreciation of the enduring need to consider issues of diversity and inclusion in their roles as scientist, practitioners, and consultants.
