March 3: 6th Annual Public Official of the Year Luncheon

Hosted by the College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences’ Master of Public Administration program, this luncheon honors two appointed and two elected officials who have provided a positive influence on the ideals of public service in the greater Houston metropolitan area. This year’s winners are Harris County Judge Ed Emmett, Spring Valley Village Mayor Tom Ramsey, City of Richmond City Manager Terri Vela, and City of Houston Director of Administration and Regulatory Affairs Tina Paez. The keynote speaker is City of Houston Controller Chris Brown. The luncheon is underwritten by former City of Houston Councilmember Peter Brown, who is currently the Director of Better Houston. learn more

March 3: Workshop on Digital Humanities and Social Sciences

On March 3, the College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences is hosting a half-day workshop on digital humanities and social sciences. This workshop will feature projects currently underway at the University of Houston, and it will showcase resources available through CLASS that can assist faculty and graduate students interested in digital scholarship. Claude Willan, a research associate and digital humanities scholar at the Center for Digital Humanities at Princeton University, will lead the opening session of the workshop. March 7: Feminist Wikipedia Edit-a-thon

This event is co-hosted by the College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences’ Women’s Gender and Sexuality Studies and UH Libraries. A lecture will be held at 2 p.m., followed by training and editing at 3:30 p.m. It will take place at the Rockwell Pavilion in the UH MD Anderson Library. learn more

March 8-12: CLASS hosts the National Council for Black Studies Conference

University of Houston College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences’ African American Studies Program will host the 41st National Council for Black Studies Conference (NCBS) at the Hilton Houston Post Oak. NCBS is the leading organization of Black Studies professionals in the world. learn more

March 22: 20th Annual Table Talk

The Friends of Women’s Studies (FWS) at the University of Houston’s College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences presents the 20th Annual Table Talk Luncheon at 11a.m., March 22 at the Hilton Americas-Houston hotel. This lively lunch brings together a dynamic and diverse group of Houston women in a format that builds connections in support of the Women’s, Gender & Sexuality Studies Program at the University of Houston. learn more

March 24: 20th Gulf Coast reading series

The Gulf Coast reading series presents the poetry and prose of UH graduate students, paired with prominent featured visiting writers. Participating students come from the College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences' MFA and Ph.D. programs in Creative Writing. This event features professional author Nickole Brown, College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences Ph.D. candidate Matthew Krajniak, and JP Gritton, a local author who teaches English and composition in Houston. The reading will be held at Rudyard’s Pub (2010 Waugh Drive) at 7 p.m. learn more

March 31 – April 1: Implementing Mexican American Studies in Texas Public Schools: The Power of Culturally Relevant Pedagogy

The College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences’ Center for Mexican American Studies is hosting a conference titled, "Implementing Mexican American Studies in Texas Public Schools: The Power of Culturally Relevant Pedagogy." The conference will be held on March 31 and April 1. Aimed at school superintendents, principals, teachers, school board members, and community residents, the purpose of the conference is to demonstrate how implementing Mexican American studies in public schools significantly improves academic performance, attendance rates, graduation rates, and the self-esteem of students. learn more

March 21: Beyond the Arab Muslim Ban: Feminist Futures and Joint Struggle

The Nijad and Zeina Fares Arab-American Educational Foundation Annual Distinguished Lecture in Modern Arab Studies will feature Professor Nadine Naber, a leading theorist and author in the field of Arab-American studies who teaches in the Gender and Women's Studies Program at the University of Illinois - Chicago. Drawing on her extensive research on race, gender, and Arab and Muslim American communities, Professor Naber will examine the current administration's Arab Muslim travel ban, reflecting on potential feminist responses and the future of joint struggles. This event, hosted by the College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences and The Arab-American Education Foundation Chair in Modern Arab History, will begin at 6:30 p.m. at the University of Houston Alumni Association Great Hall, 3204 Cullen Blvd.

April 3: Deadline for nominations for the 2017 Ross M. Lence Award for Teaching Excellence

The College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences invites you to nominate a faculty member for the 2017 Ross M. Lence Teaching Excellence Awards. Two awards will be presented to CLASS faculty members deemed worthy of recognition, one in the Social Sciences; one in the Humanities. The category is NOT based on the nominee’s department. Nominees must indicate the category based on the kind of teaching they do. Nominations are valid for two years for those not selected in the first year of their nomination. Winners will receive a $3,000 bonus. learn more
