New study: Magical two-hour marathon mark can be broken now
Breaking the two-hour marathon mark is a magical, athletic milestone that has fascinated the running world for years but has never been accomplished. Now, a team of researchers from the University of Houston College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences and the University of Colorado Boulder has laid out a series of mathematical calculations showing about four and a half minutes could be shaved off the current world record by using lighter shoes, a collaborative drafting strategy and ideal course. read more

Several members of the CLASS faculty have been recognized recently by their professional organizations for achievements in their field. Two psychology faculty members, Dr. Matthew W. Gallagher and Dr. Michael Zvolensky, in addition to one Health and Human Performance faculty member, Dr. Kevin Haubrick, were acknowledged for their accomplishments. read more
Nominations underway for the 2017 Ross M. Lence Award for Teaching Excellence
The College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences invites you to nominate a faculty member for the 2017 Ross M. Lence Teaching Excellence Awards. Two awards will be presented to CLASS faculty members deemed worthy of recognition, one in the Social Sciences; one in the Humanities. The category is NOT based on the nominee’s department. Nominees must indicate the category based on the kind of teaching they do. Nominations are valid for two years for those not selected in the first year of their nomination. Winners will receive a $3,000 bonus. read more
CLASS doctoral candidate’s research on minority women and politics has relevance to current events
During the most recent presidential election, and in the weeks following our new president’s term, the way individuals of different races and genders are represented in the United States’ political system has become a key issue discussed across news outlets and in the community. College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences doctoral candidate Kenicia Wright has been paying close attention to these discussions because the topic is directly in line with her academic research interests. read more
Walt Whitman’s century and a half-year-old works discovered by UH graduate student
Walt Whitman once said, “Nothing is ever really lost, or can be lost.” This holds true for Zachary Turpin, a University of Houston doctoral candidate in the College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences’ English department. Using modern digital tools, Turpin discovered a long-forgotten, never-digitized novel written by 19th-century author Walt Whitman. read more

Scholarships, service opportunities help CLASS student prepare for his future law career
Mason Malone is a College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences student with two majors – liberal studies and economics. He is also enrolled in the Honors College’s 3+3 undergraduate/law dual degree program. This program will allow him to begin law school during his senior year at UH, one year early. read more
Economics and political science departments co-host conference on the political economy
The College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences economics and political science departments co-hosted a conference on the political economy last month. The conference featured research papers by leading economists and political scientists from around the country. Well-known Harvard economist, N. Gregory Mankiw, who is recognized as the 23rd most influential economist in the world, presented a talk titled, “Today’s Economy and Its Discontents.” read more
CLASS hosts successful National Council for Black Studies Conference
The College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences’ African American Studies (AAS) program, in partnership with the 41st National Council for Black Studies Conference (held March 8-12), experienced record-breaking attendance when over 500 Black Studies professionals and scholars from a variety of disciplines convened at the Hilton Houston-Post Oak to hear lectures, talks and to participate in workshops and learn from leading Black Studies professionals from around the world. read more
Valenti School’s Big Talk event features writers from the TV show, Empire
The College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences’ Jack J. Valenti School of Communication recently presented its latest installment of the Big Talk series. The Big Talk on Race, Gender and Hollywood featured writers JaNeika James and JaSheika James - story editors on Fox’s award-winning show Empire - and Dr. Kinitra Brooks - horror scholar who specializes in African American and Afro-Caribbean women’s literature and film.
