What degrees are offered by the Department of History?
The Department of History offers the MA and Ph.D. in History. We also offer the MA in Public History
Do you offer funding packages for graduate students?
Yes! We offer Teaching Assistantships and Research Assistantships for Doctoral Students. There are also some Research Assistantships available in other departments that students can take advantage of. MA students will not normally receive departmental funding
Will I have to take a qualifying exam?
All doctoral students must pass a comprehensive written and oral examination on fields established by the student’s exam committee. For MA students, the department offers both a thesis and non-thesis track. The latter will require students to pass a comprehensive written and oral examination to fulfill requirements for the degree.
Do Ph.D. students automatically receive the MA?
No. Students do not automatically receive the MA degree after their second year in the program. Under certain circumstances, students can apply to receive a terminal MA degree.
What is the average time-length for completion of the MA and Ph.D. degree?
We expect doctoral students to fulfill all requirements for the Ph.D. in 5 years. MA students should complete their degree program in 2 years.
