Bio-Sketch

Dr. Layci Harrison, PhD, LAT, ATC is a Clinical Assistant Professor in the Master of Athletic Training (MAT) Program where she serves as the coordinator of clinical education for 1st year MAT students and the coordinator of interprofessional education and patient simulation for the MAT program. Dr. Harrison earned a PhD in Health and Human Performance from Middle Tennessee State, an MS in Exercise Science from Cumberland University, and a BS in Athletic Training from Lock Haven University.

Dr. Harrison teaches the orthopedic module for the Master of Athletic Training Program. She is also the advisor for the Athletic Training Student Society and the Stop the Bleed student organization at UH. Dr. Harrison focuses her efforts on orthopedics and interprofessional education. She earned a microcredential in Interprofessional Education & Practice Faculty Development Program through The University of North Texas Health Science Center and is a TeamSTEPPS® Master Trainer.

Outside of teaching responsibilities, Dr. Harrison serves as a consultant for the Astronaut Strength, Conditioning, and Rehabilitation program at Johnson Space Center and a content expert for the traumatic brain injury course for the Houston Police Academy. As an active member of both the National Athletic Trainers’ Association and the American College of Sports Medicine, Dr. Harrison serves on various regional and national committees. She also serves the Commission on Accreditation of Athletic Training Education as a committee member and peer reviewer. She is a reviewer for multiple journals and serves the International Community of Scholars in Kinesiology as the Director of the Speaker Series for Student Research Week.

Research Interests

Dr. Harrison’s research interests include functional movement and how movement is related to balance ability. Specifically, she is am interested in ways to improve functional movement and the effects of improved functional movement scores on injury risk. She also studies how the effects of balance training can be crossed from the trained limb to the contralateral limb following lower body injuries as a way to expedite the injury rehabilitation process.
