Valenti School Launches Paid 2018-19 Internship Program

The Valenti School of Communication at the University of Houston has launched a paid internship program for students pursuing careers in strategic communication, media production, journalism, graphic design, marketing or a related field are encouraged to apply.

Students selected for this program will work under the supervision of the Valenti School of Communication’s communication manager. The program offers students hands-on experience developing content geared for a diverse population of students, alumni, donors and community partners.

The program, which is unpaid the first semester, offers students a $2,000 stipend for each subsequent semester worked. Students with a strong desire to put their classroom lessons to practice in a real-world setting under the guidance of an experienced communicator are encouraged to apply.

The application deadline is Wednesday, August 15, 2018.

The following positions are available:

  • Social Media & Writing Internship

    The social media and writing intern will develop marketing copy, write news articles, profiles and press releases, manage social media content, construct newsletters and more for the department. This student will help manage the department’s written voice and narrative and will work closely with other interns to craft our communication strategy. Finally, this intern will also craft social media content for the school’s leadership team.

    The ideal candidate will:

    • Possess both creative and journalistic writing skills and experience
    • Demonstrate competence with a variety of social media channels, including Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, SnapChat and LinkedIn
    • Possess a self-starting mentality that allows him/her to work under minimal supervision
    • Possess the genuine curiosity and strong active listening skills needed for crafting a good story
    • Excel at working on multiple projects and deadlines
    • Love teamwork and collaborating with fellow interns to tell better stories
    • Possess basic-to-intermediate design skills and have a natural eye for good designs
    • Strongly Preferred: Be Mac-proficient
    • Strongly Preferred: Be proficient in Adobe Creative Cloud

    Additional Requirements

    • Must be available to work 12 – 20 hrs throughout the work week (Monday – Friday)
    • Must have at least one academic school year remaining at the University of Houston before graduation
    • Strongly Preferred: An undergraduate student of at least junior standing or a graduate student at the University of Houston

  • Graphic Design Internship

    The graphic design intern will assist the Valenti School of Communication in developing its brand visually. This student will design beautiful digital and print collateral for branding and promotional purposes. The content will be displayed on various mediums, including the department’s website, social media channels and digital signage boards. The intern will also assist in developing print advertisements, PowerPoint presentations, invitations, postcards, research posters and flyers. 

    The ideal candidate will:

    • Demonstrate extreme competence with Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator and/or another graphic design software
    • Love designing graphics that evokes a positive, emotional reaction
    • Exhibit strong active listening skills needed for incorporating team feedback into revised content
    • Possess a self-starting mentality that allows him/her to work under minimal supervision
    • Excel at working on multiple projects and deadlines
    • Love teamwork and collaborating with fellow interns to tell better stories
    • Be extremely detail-oriented
    • Possess basic effective communication skills (written and verbal)
    • Excel at working on multiple projects and deadlines
    • Strongly Preferred: Have a proven portfolio that shows he/she can create unique design ideas under strict brand guidelines
    • Strongly Preferred: Be Mac-proficient

  • Media Internship (Photo & Video)

    The media intern will assist the Valenti School of Communication in developing its brand visually and audibly. This student will direct and edit videos that highlight our building, students, alumni, faculty, partners and more. This content will be promoted on our website and social media channels.

    The ideal candidate will:

    • Demonstrate extreme competence in Final Cut Pro, Adobe Premiere or another video editing software
    • Possess classroom or professional experience in videography, non-linear editing, lighting and audio for video.
    • Monitor video trends on social media and incorporate them, with a creative spin, in our content
    • Exhibit strong active listening skills needed for incorporating team feedback into revised content
    • Possess a self-starting mentality that allows him/her to work under minimal supervision
    • Excel at working on multiple projects and deadlines
    • Love teamwork and collaborating with fellow interns to tell better stories
    • Be extremely detail-oriented
    • Possess basic effective communication skills (written and verbal)
    • Excel at working on multiple projects and deadlines
    • Strongly Preferred: Be Mac-proficient

  • Audio Production Internship

    The audio production intern will edit audio projects for the Valenti School, which primarily includes the episodes, announcements and promos for our monthly student-oriented podcast, Press Play. Press Play showcases groundbreakers, disruptors, and leaders in the communication industry who are making an impact on our world. The podcast features short, candid conversations that go beyond our guests' current success and explore their strategies, failures, and career paths.

    The ideal candidate will:

    • Demonstrate extreme competence in Adobe Audition, Audacity or another audio editing software
    • Possess basic-to-intermediate audio production skills
    • Be comfortable organizing audio files and posting them on podcast platforms
    • Monitor podcast trends and incorporate them, with a creative spin, in our content
    • Exhibit strong active listening skills needed for incorporating team feedback into revised content
    • Possess a self-starting mentality that allows him/her to work under minimal supervision
    • Excel at working on multiple projects and deadlines
    • Love teamwork and collaborating with fellow interns to tell better stories
    • Be extremely detail-oriented
    • Possess basic effective communication skills (written and verbal)
    • Excel at working on multiple projects and deadlines
    • Strongly Preferred: Be Mac-proficient
