The African American Studies Department at the University of Houston invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor of African American or African Diasporic studies with a preference in health or environmental sciences. Research areas may include race and environmental justice, intersections of science and race, minority health or health disparities, including mental health disparities. Part of the mission of AAS is to make connections with local and/or national communities of African and diasporic peoples, therefore, preference will also be given to candidates with community-engaged experience.
We seek a scholar with a strong promise of scholarly productivity, as well as experience with teaching and course design at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. Applicants must hold the Ph.D. or equivalent degree in African American Studies or a health field by time of appointment. A background in community-engagement is preferred as well as success in generating external funding.
In March 2021, the UH Department of African American Studies (AAS) became a degree-granting department, with the mission of developing the knowledge of people of African descent in America, throughout the greater Diaspora and on the continent. With over forty faculty affiliates across the campus who study African, African American, Caribbean, and Latin American experiences, AAS is the center of Black intellectual thought at UH. This hire is one of two that is occurring this year and part of a cluster of hires that will take place over the next two years. We offer an undergraduate major, minor and a graduate certificate.
