Revisiting the concept of matrifocality in feminist anthropology by investigating narratives of mothering from Malaiyaka (“Hill Country”) Tamil women workers on Sri Lanka’s tea and rubber plantations. As Malaiyaka Tamil women cross, share, and resist the boundaries of gender, caste, and kinship investment when representing themselves and their labor, their lived realities unsettle the plantation’s hegemonic images and the acceptance of their ongoing legacies of structural violence and exploitation.
