Optimizing Energy Usage

Thursday, January 30, 2025

12:00 pm - 1:00 pm

As we move towards extreme power densities for HPC and AI systems, the carbon footprint, energy cost, and responsible resource usage are becoming crucial for company perception and operations. As a leading industrial user of HPC systems, Viridien has been optimizing power usage for over a decade. This presentation overviews the areas being exploring to improve this situation, including advancements in energy-efficient hardware, software optimization techniques, innovative cooling solutions, and power-aware operations.

About the Speaker

Laurent Clerc is CTO for HPC and Cloud Solutions at Viridien. Before becoming CTO, Clerc oversaw the design and operation of large HPC installations worldwide for nearly 30 years. He pioneered the early introduction of technologies such as Linux Clusters, GPUs, and full immersion cooling. Additionally, Clerc led software developments, architecting client/server products for data delivery, scheduling, and visualization of geophysical data. Most recently, he participated in the transformation of Viridien’s HPC operations, preparing for market diversification by introducing a service-based organization, product architectures, infosec certification, a modern customer experience support team, and DevOps methodologies.
