SARS-CoV-2 Biology and Countermeasure Development

Tuesday, November 1, 2022

12:00 pm - 1:00 pm

About the Event

The seminar will focus on SARS-CoV-2 biology and countermeasure development, including new experimental systems for SARS-CoV-2 that can be performed at biosafety-level-2; viral fitness and transmission of variants of concern; and vaccine-elicited antibody neutralization of different variants.

About the Speaker

Pei-Yong Shi, Ph.D., is John Sealy Distinguished Chair in Innovations in Molecular Biology, Director of the Institute for Drug Discovery, and Vice President for Research Innovation at the University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB). He works on RNA virus, drug discovery, and vaccine research. His group developed the first reverse genetic systems for the epidemic West Nile virus and Zika virus and discovered flavivirus N7 and 2’O methyltransferase activities. Many of his technologies have been licensed to leading pharmaceutical companies for countermeasure development. A recent example is his reporter neutralization assay that has enabled the rapid development of Pfizer’s COVID-19 vaccine, the first vaccine with efficacy in humans.
